DOOM: The Dark Ages Sets Revelations for July 7 - A Purgatory Campaign, the Chain Spear, and Upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro

id Software dates the Revelations story expansion for July 7, 2026 - new levels, demons, and the throwable Chain Spear - while a free Update 4 brings advanced PSSR to PS5 Pro at a locked 60fps.

DOOM: The Dark Ages Sets Revelations for July 7 - A Purgatory Campaign, the Chain Spear, and Upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro

id Software is not done with the medieval-industrial hellscape of DOOM: The Dark Ages. The studio has locked in July 7, 2026 for Revelations, a meaty story expansion that drops the Slayer into a purgatory he has to claw his way out of - and the same date brings a free Update 4 that hands PS5 Pro owners a sharper, more stable image courtesy of an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.

Revelations is pitched as a proper campaign add-on rather than a handful of bolt-on missions. The setup finds a wounded, betrayed Doom Slayer trapped in a mental prison, able to escape only by forging new strength with the help of a mysterious ally before confronting a divine abomination. Expect new levels, fresh demon types to dismantle, and an all-new throwable weapon - the Chain Spear - to fold into the parry-and-punish rhythm that defined the base game.

What you get on July 7

The expansion is bundled into the DOOM: The Dark Ages Premium Edition and the Collector's Bundle, and base-game owners can pick it up as a standalone add-on for $19.99. Alongside the campaign, a free update rolls out Ripatorium 3.0, expanding the customisable arena-challenge mode with deeper customisation, improved pass-code generation, and personal preset options. Revelations owners also get extra maps, demons, and fully upgraded weapons to take into the Ripatorium.

PSSR 2 makes PS5 Pro the cleanest way to play

Update 4 also brings the advanced version of PSSR - the machine-learning reconstruction tech Sony rolled out on PS5 Pro earlier this year - to The Dark Ages. It rebuilds a higher-quality image from what idTech 8 renders, leaning on motion, depth, exposure, and sub-pixel sampling to keep the picture sharp and stable. id says the upgrade retains more fine detail with fewer artifacts, particularly in distant geometry and particle-heavy scenes, cutting down the shimmering that fast movement can introduce. Crucially, performance stays locked at 60fps on PS5 Pro even with the heavier reconstruction running.

It's a tidy one-two punch heading into July: a new slice of campaign for the people who tore through the main game, and a free visual bump for anyone playing on Sony's enthusiast hardware. DOOM: The Dark Ages is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with Revelations launching across all platforms on July 7, 2026.
