HoYoverse has dated Genshin Impact Version 7.1. A Rekviem for the Underworld arrives on 23 September, and it is the update where the Snezhnaya arc stops circling and finally puts the Tsaritsa, Ronova and Rhinedottir in the same room.
It is also an anniversary patch, which means the giveaway attached to it is unusually large even by HoYoverse’s standards.
The Tsaritsa finally explains herself
The 7.1 Archon Quest is the payoff for a plot thread that has been running since Mondstadt: what the Tsaritsa has actually been doing with the Gnoses she has spent years collecting. Version 7.1 puts the Traveler in front of her and answers it.
Standing in the way is Ronova, the Ruler of Death, who has been using her authority to stall Snezhnaya’s progress outright - and the arrival of Rhinedottir, the Ruler of Life, does not simplify anything. The trailer’s voice cast reads like a roll call of long-teased names: Ronova, Rhinedottir, Pierro, Dainsleif and Anastasya Feodorovna Snezhnaya all appear.
Finishing the Archon Quest pays out 620 Primogems. Ronova does not leave afterwards - she becomes a new Weekly Boss, which is the traditional Genshin way of letting you keep losing to a story antagonist on a seven-day cycle.
Two new 5-stars, both built around Stellar Swirl
Vesna is an Anemo sword user and the youngest of the Druzhina commanders. She summons Spirit Blades and converts Cryo Swirl reactions into Stellar Swirl, with healing support attached and - as a Vila - the ability to fly during exploration. That last part is the kind of utility that quietly reshapes how people move around the map long after the banner closes.
Vodyanitsa is a Hydro catalyst user, the Water Imp Prima Donna, and the more complicated of the two. She transforms into her Water Imp form to provide continuous healing, boost team ATK, cut enemy resistances and empower Stellar Vortices for bigger Swirl damage. On paper she is the enabler and Vesna is the one who cashes the cheque.

Banners and the Moonchase return
Phase one runs both new characters. Phase two brings back Skirk and Escoffier.
Away from Snezhnaya, the Moonchase Festival returns to Liyue for the first time in five years, with new mini-games and a 4-star sword as the event reward. There is also a snowball event in Snezhnaya and a tournament-prediction challenge in Natlan, plus an autumn refresh for Miliastra Wonderland that adds new cosmetics and collaborative editing tools for shared builds.
Stellar Swirl is the point
Both new characters exist to feed the same mechanic, which tells you what HoYoverse wants the Snezhnaya meta to look like. Stellar Swirl is the region’s twist on the oldest reaction in the game: instead of Anemo simply spreading an element around, the converted reaction routes into Stellar Vortices that can be amplified by the right support.
Vodyanitsa creates and empowers those vortices while keeping the team standing; Vesna turns Cryo Swirl into Stellar Swirl and adds Spirit Blades on top. Run separately they are each a decent unit. Run together they are a closed loop, which is the standard HoYoverse pattern for a two-character launch phase and the reason phase one banners tend to be the expensive ones.
For anyone deciding where to spend, the honest read is that Vodyanitsa is the harder unit to replace later - enablers with healing, ATK buffing and resistance shred attached usually age better than the damage dealers built around them.
On phones, this is a heavy patch
Genshin has been on mobile since day one and Snezhnaya has been the most demanding region it has shipped, between the weather effects and the density of the new areas. A patch that adds an Archon Quest climax, a new Weekly Boss, a returning Liyue festival and a Miliastra Wonderland refresh is a sizeable download, and it is worth clearing space before the 23rd rather than on the day.
Cross-progression remains the practical argument for playing it on a phone at all: the account is the same whether you are pulling on mobile during a commute or fighting Ronova on PC that evening, and nothing about 7.1 changes that arrangement.
The anniversary payout
This is the part that will drive installs. Version 7.1 hands every player:
- One free event-exclusive 5-star character, chosen from a select lineup
- One free standard 5-star character
- 1,600 Primogems
- 10 Intertwined Fates
Two free 5-stars plus 1,600 Primogems is a meaningful haul for a returning player, and it lands on the same patch as a story climax the game has been building toward for years - which is not a coincidence.
Genshin Impact Version 7.1 launches 23 September on iOS, Android, PC, PlayStation and Xbox, with cross-progression across all of them.
