Sony saved its biggest surprise for last. God of War Laufey, the next chapter in Santa Monica Studio's acclaimed saga, closed out the June 2 State of Play with a roughly 20-minute gameplay reveal - and a stunning twist: this time you don't play as Kratos.
Faye's story, at last
The new protagonist is Laufey, better known as Faye - Kratos' late wife and Atreus' mother, a character whose shadow has loomed over the Norse saga without ever taking center stage. Death was supposed to be the end, but Faye awakens after her own funeral in the Everywhen, the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns, a transcendent realm where gods and creatures from different mythologies converge. Discovering that the plans she laid to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk, she sets out to fight her way back to the ones she loves.
A faster, more magical God of War
Combat keeps the series' weighty action-adventure roots but pushes toward a faster, more aerial tempo - Faye moves seamlessly between ground and air without halting the action, wielding a magical sword built around momentum and attack-chaining, plus a soul-magic system that lets her temporarily siphon a fallen enemy's soul and turn it against the rest. The cast is stacked, too: Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil) voices Faye, Perlina Lau plays Rue, the guardian of Faye's sword, and Jack Quaid (The Boys) is the mysterious talking cube Phranque. Ariel Lawrence directs, with franchise veteran Cory Barlog serving as head of creative. There's no release date yet - God of War Laufey is confirmed as a PS5 exclusive - but after that first look, the wait just got a lot harder.
