Hogwarts Legacy Is Free on the Epic Games Store Right Now — But the Clock Runs Out Today

Hogwarts Legacy Is Free on the Epic Games Store Right Now — But the Clock Runs Out Today

If you haven't played Hogwarts Legacy yet, the universe is giving you one last nudge. The Epic Games Store is offering Avalanche Software's massive open-world wizarding RPG for free, but the deal expires today, May 3, 2026, at 8:00 AM PDT. Once you claim it, the game is yours permanently — no strings attached, no subscription required.

A $60 Game for Nothing

This is the second time Epic has given away Hogwarts Legacy for free. The first was back in December 2025, when the giveaway was announced at The Game Awards. This time around, the deal celebrates the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter, and it's drawn millions of new players into the wizarding world.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Hogwarts Legacy is set in the 1800s wizarding world and puts you in the shoes of a late-enrolling student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You'll attend classes, learn spells, brew potions, tame magical beasts, explore a fully realized open world, and uncover an ancient secret that threatens the wizarding world itself.

How to Claim It

Head to the Epic Games Store — either through the launcher or the website — search for Hogwarts Legacy, and hit the "Get" button. That's it. The game will be added to your library permanently. You do need a free Epic Games account, but you don't need to install the game immediately; just claiming it is enough.

After this deal expires, the next free game on Epic is Oddsparks: An Automation Adventure, available until May 7. But let's be honest — a free copy of one of 2023's biggest RPGs is not the kind of deal that comes around every day.

Is It Worth Your Time?

Hogwarts Legacy received generally positive reviews at launch, with praise for its gorgeous open world, faithful recreation of Hogwarts, and satisfying spell combat system. The 2024 Summer Update added photo mode, new quests, and quality-of-life improvements that smoothed out many of the rough edges. If you're even remotely curious about wizarding world games, free is the perfect price to find out.

Want a deeper dive? We've published a full Hogwarts Legacy review that covers the combat, the castle, story pacing, the third-act problems, and how the game holds up three years and several patches later. Score: 86/100.

Hogwarts Legacy is the most faithful, ambitious, and atmospherically rich Harry Potter game ever made — a sprawling RPG that finally lets you live the Hogwarts fantasy at a level the franchise has needed for two decades. Held back by a sagging middle act and dated open-world design, but the highs are unforgettable.
