Live TV on PS5 Launches Today: 100-Plus Free Channels, No PS Plus Required, With Crunchyroll, FOX, NBCUniversal, NFL and UFC on Board

Sony has quietly turned the PS5 into a free television. Live TV on PS5 launched today in the United States, a free ad-supported streaming service sitting in the console's Media tab with more than 100 live channels plus on-demand content, and no subscription of any kind attached.

You do not need PlayStation Plus. You do not need a cable login. You open the Media tab, select the Live TV on PS5 icon, sign in with the PlayStation Account you already have, and you are watching.

Who is actually supplying the channels

The partner list is the part that makes this more than a curiosity. Sony has signed Amazon MGM Studios, Crunchyroll, FOX, NBCUniversal, the NFL Channel and UFC, which is a genuinely broad spread for a launch-day FAST service rather than the usual wall of anonymous filler feeds.

Movies come via MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action, FilmRise, Sony One Horror Hits and Cinevault. Television includes Community, The Shield, Hell's Kitchen, The Walking Dead Universe, Forensic Files, Unsolved Mysteries, Deal or No Deal USA, Fear Factor and Ice Road Truckers. The anime tier is the one that will get noticed: Crunchyroll is running exclusive channels alongside Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, Death Note and Black Clover.

Sport is the deepest category. FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now, UFC and MMA feeds, plus football, hockey, motorsport, golf, boxing and soccer channels. News and weather run through NBC News Now, Fox Weather and LiveNOW from FOX. There is also a creator and specialty band covering Hot Ones, Spotify's The Ringer, esports and gaming programming.

Why Sony is doing this

The strategic logic is not subtle. The PS5 is already the primary media device attached to a very large number of televisions, and Sony has spent years watching that engagement leak to apps it does not own. A first-party FAST service turns idle console time into inventory Sony sells directly, and it does it without asking the user for a single dollar or a new account.

It also plugs a gap that has been open since the PS3 era. PlayStation has cycled through PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Video and a rotating cast of third-party apps without ever landing a free, always-on video layer of its own. Live TV on PS5 is the first attempt that does not require the viewer to buy anything.

The obvious tension is discovery. FAST services live or die on their channel guide, and Sony's announcement is light on the interface specifics — there is no detail yet on picture-in-picture, guide behaviour while a game is suspended, or how the app coexists with Activity Cards and Game Base. Those are exactly the details that decide whether this becomes habit or a single curious visit.

Availability and what comes next

Live TV on PS5 is US-only at launch. Sony says it intends to expand to Canada and is "exploring additional regions," which is standard phrasing for licensing negotiations that are not finished. Content rights for live sport and network television are negotiated territory by territory, so European and Asian rollouts are likely to look nothing like the American channel list when they arrive.

There is no word on whether the service will reach PS4, and given the naming, it seems safe to assume it will not. For now it is a PS5 feature, live today, sitting one tab away from your games.
