SEGA Pulls Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition From Sale Two Days After Launch

SEGA and Creative Assembly are temporarily removing the PC re-release from sale and reinstating the original 2011 game while they investigate its problems. Existing owners keep access, and no return date has been given.

SEGA Pulls Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition From Sale Two Days After Launch

Two days after it went on sale, Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is coming off store shelves. SEGA and Creative Assembly said on October 15 that they are working with platform holders to temporarily remove the PC re-release from sale and to put the original 2011 game back up for purchase while they investigate what went wrong. People who already bought the Complete Edition keep it and can keep playing.

What SEGA actually said

The statement, posted to SEGA's western social accounts and signed by both SEGA and Creative Assembly, opens with an unusually blunt admission: the Complete Edition "has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards." The companies say they have seen player feedback, comments and reviews, and that they agree the current experience "is not where it needs to be."

The practical steps are threefold. The Complete Edition is being pulled from sale temporarily. The original SHOGUN 2, which had been taken down ahead of the new version's arrival, is being reinstated in its place. And SEGA says it is working closely with its development partner to find the causes of the problems, deliver improvements and bring the release up to the quality players expect from the Total War name.

What the statement does not include is just as notable. There is no list of the specific faults being investigated, no timeline for the Complete Edition's return, and no mention of refunds. Anyone who wants their money back will need to go through the normal refund process of the store they bought from.

What the Complete Edition promised

SEGA announced the Complete Edition in mid-September as a modernised home for one of the most loved entries in the series. It was set to bundle every piece of SHOGUN 2 content in one package, including the Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai campaigns, and to move the 2011 strategy game onto a 64-bit build so it could use more memory than the original ever could.

On top of that came quality-of-life work aimed at modern PCs: UI scaling for 1440p and 4K displays, integrated Mod.io support for the game's long-running modding scene, new Japanese and Chinese voice acting, and more than 50 minor factions made playable for the first time. The work was handled with an outside development partner. It launched on PC on October 13.

On paper that is a strong pitch for a game that still has a dedicated audience fifteen years on. In practice, SEGA's own words now concede the release did not hold up.

Why the original coming back matters

The most immediately useful part of the announcement for new players is the return of the original SHOGUN 2. When a remaster replaces the game it is based on, the old version usually stops being sold, and that is what happened here before the Complete Edition went live. Pulling the new version without restoring the old one would have left SHOGUN 2 unavailable to buy at all.

Restoring the 2011 release closes that gap. Anyone who wants to play SHOGUN 2 can buy the version that has been stable for years, while those who already own the Complete Edition keep both their purchase and access to the game.

A rare reversal for SEGA

Publishers seldom pull a release this quickly. Patching a troubled launch in place is the usual route, and a temporary delisting two days in signals that SEGA and Creative Assembly see problems that go beyond a quick hotfix. Agreeing publicly that the release falls below their own standard, rather than promising a patch is on the way, points the same direction.

It also comes at a sensitive time for the Total War brand. Creative Assembly is preparing Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. A remaster of one of the series' most respected games stumbling at launch is not the backdrop it would have wanted.

What happens next

For now, the situation is simple:

SEGA has not said when, or in what form, the Complete Edition will return to sale.

If you are deciding whether to buy SHOGUN 2 right now, the original is the version on offer. If you already own the Complete Edition, nothing is being taken away. Expect the next update to come once SEGA and its partner have an actual fix to show, rather than on a fixed date.
