Minecraft Dungeons II Shows Off the Sift

Mojang's Official Gameplay Trailer finally shows Minecraft Dungeons II in motion: a party of four stepping through a rift into a new dimension called the Sift. Armour splits into four independent slots, the Twisted Warden is waiting, and the whole thing lands on Game Pass on September 29.

Mojang has finally shown what Minecraft Dungeons II actually plays like, and the answer arrives with a date attached: September 29, 2026. The Official Gameplay Trailer went up on Xbox's channel on August 20 and runs a tight 90 seconds, but it does the one thing the reveal trailer back in June never did - it puts four players on screen at once and lets them fight.

The Sift is the sequel's big idea

The trailer opens on rifts tearing open across the Overworld and a party stepping through one together. On the other side is the Sift, a new dimension that is doing a lot of heavy lifting for this sequel. The first thing the party finds there is charming - small, harmless-looking creatures wandering around a glowing landscape. Roughly eight seconds later those creatures are the least of anyone's problems, and the trailer settles into the thing Dungeons has always done well: four people mashing through a room that is far too full of monsters.

What is worth noticing is how different the Sift looks from the original game's dungeon crawl. The first Minecraft Dungeons was mostly corridors and arenas dressed up as biomes. The footage here shows open sightlines, floating terrain, vertical drops and water that glows from underneath. It reads less like a series of levels and more like somewhere you travel through.

Four distinct builds, one platform, and a lot of water that is almost certainly hiding something.

Four armour slots instead of one

The headline mechanical change is the equipment system. The original game gave you a single armour item that defined your whole build - you were the Frost Armour player or the Evocation Robe player, and that was that. The sequel splits armour into four independent slots, which means you mix and match pieces to chase a specific effect rather than committing to one preset.

That sits alongside the returning weapon, artifact and enchantment layers, plus talismans as a new category. Mojang's framing on the official page is deliberately open-ended - "the best way to face them is completely up to you" - but the practical read is that build variety is where the studio expects players to spend their time. For a game whose original loop was "run the level again at a higher difficulty for better loot," giving that loot more places to land is the right lever to pull.

The Twisted Warden and friends

Enemies get a similar upgrade in ambition. The Sift brings its own roster, and the one Mojang keeps putting front and centre is the Twisted Warden - a corrupted read on the Warden that stalks the deep dark in base Minecraft, and comfortably the most intimidating thing shown across either trailer. It first surfaced at Minecraft Live back in May, alongside the Chaos Cubed update, and it has been the sequel's designated boogeyman ever since.

The Sift's terrain is a long way from the first game's corridor dungeons.

Where and how you can play it

Minecraft Dungeons II ships on September 29 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It is on Xbox Game Pass at launch, which is the detail most likely to decide whether this becomes a thing people actually play together - the first game's co-op numbers were driven hard by Game Pass, and Mojang clearly knows it.

Co-op supports up to four players both online and on the couch, and the Steam listing has the game at $29.99. Development is once again shared between Mojang Studios and Double Eleven, the studio that handled the original's post-launch DLC seasons - which is a reasonable reason to expect this one to get supported rather than abandoned.

Pre-orders are open now, and they carry the usual small bundle: two hero skins, a Twisted cape, and a Twisted chicken pet. The chicken is, as ever, the real selling point.

The short version

June's reveal told us the sequel existed. This trailer tells us what it is: a bigger, more open dungeon crawler built around a new dimension, with a build system that finally has room to breathe, arriving on Game Pass in five weeks. For a series whose entire pitch is "Minecraft, but you and three friends hit things," that is close to exactly the right set of changes.
