Mortal Shell II Locks In August 20 With a New Trailer - and an Open Beta That Already Won Players Over

Cold Symmetry's dark-fantasy Soulslike sequel arrives August 20 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. A new release date trailer, eight playable Shells, a stamina-free posture system, and a beta that pulled 600,000 downloads at 93% positive.

Mortal Shell II Locks In August 20 With a New Trailer - and an Open Beta That Already Won Players Over

The wait for Mortal Shell II now has a firm finish line. Developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack have confirmed that the dark-fantasy Soulslike will launch worldwide on August 20, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, and they marked the occasion with a new release date trailer set to the churning dread of Paradise Lost's “Darker Thoughts.”

The original Mortal Shell arrived in 2020 as a lean, uncompromising riff on FromSoftware's formula, built around the idea of possessing hardened bodies called Shells. The sequel keeps that hook but widens the frame considerably. Cold Symmetry describes a larger, more interconnected world, and combat has been reworked so that posture replaces stamina — a change that pushes players toward aggressive, rhythm-driven exchanges rather than cautious stamina management. Stealth approaches and ranged options round out a kit that feels notably broader than the first game's.

Eight Shells and a beta that already delivered

At the heart of the sequel are eight unique playable Shells, each a distinct body with its own strengths, weaknesses and playstyle. Swapping between them remains the series' signature wrinkle, letting a single run pivot from heavy-armored brawling to nimbler, evasion-focused fighting depending on the Shell you inhabit.

If the studio wanted proof that appetite for the sequel is real, the open beta provided it. The Steam test drew more than 600,000 downloads and landed a 93% positive rating across over 1,800 player reviews before the full game is even out — an unusually strong showing for a mid-budget Soulslike three weeks ahead of launch.

Editions and early access

The standard edition is priced at $49.99. Players who spring for the Devout Edition ($59.99) get up to 72 hours of early access — meaning a head start from around August 17 — plus the exclusive Obsidian skin set that reskins all eight Shells. A physical Revered Edition has also surfaced at retail, though notably that boxed version is listed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

With the beta buzz banked and a date locked, Mortal Shell II is shaping up to be one of August's most closely watched action-RPGs. It lands August 20 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.
