Final Fantasy XIV Launches on Nintendo Switch 2 Today - With a Free First Month for Everyone

Square Enix's 30-million-player MMO finally lands on Switch 2, packing the full journey through Dawntrail, a free month of play for all, and no Nintendo Online required.

Final Fantasy XIV Launches on Nintendo Switch 2 Today - With a Free First Month for Everyone

After years of fan requests, Final Fantasy XIV Online is finally playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix flipped the switch today, August 4, 2026, bringing its 30-million-player MMO to Nintendo hardware for the very first time - and it is arriving with the entire journey through the latest expansion, Dawntrail, in tow.

The Switch 2 edition is not a stripped-down spin-off. It packs the base game (A Realm Reborn) alongside every expansion released so far - Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail - so newcomers and returning Warriors of Light are dropping into the same Eorzea that PC and PlayStation players already know. Notably, there is no Nintendo Switch Online membership required to jump online, which removes one of the friction points many expected.

Every expansion through Dawntrail is included in the Switch 2 build.

Square Enix is easing players in with a roughly one-month launch window that doubles as a server-stability test - and during that period, the first month of play is free for everyone, including existing paid accounts. A standard free trial is also live on the eShop for anyone who wants to sample A Realm Reborn and the first three expansions before committing.

Editions and pricing

Newcomers can grab the Starter Edition for $19.99, while the Complete Edition - which bundles everything up through Dawntrail - runs $59.99 (with pre-orders discounted to $41.99). A Complete Collector's Edition is available at $139.99, and the Dawntrail expansion on its own is priced at $39.99. One thing to keep in mind: players already subscribed on other platforms will need a separate Switch 2-specific subscription to keep adventuring on Nintendo's console.

The MMO's sprawling zones make the jump to handheld play.

The download weighs in at around 117GB, so clearing space on a Switch 2 microSD Express card is a good idea before diving in. For a game this expansive, being able to run raids on the couch and then take Eorzea on the road in handheld mode is a genuinely compelling pitch.

The timing is deliberate, too: the next expansion, Evercold, is slated for January 2027 across all platforms including Switch 2 - meaning Nintendo players joining now have a clear runway to catch up on a decade of story before the next chapter begins. For a lapsed adventurer or a curious Switch 2 owner, there may never have been a better on-ramp into Final Fantasy XIV.
