Mycopunk Leaves Early Access for PS5 on October 20

Mycopunk Leaves Early Access for PS5 on October 20

Devolver Digital and developer Pigeons at Play have set a date for the end of Mycopunk's long stay in Early Access. The cel-shaded co-op shooter hits 1.0 on October 20, 2026, and it arrives on PlayStation 5 the same day, bringing the whole fungal extermination business to console for the first time. It stays at $14.99, and on PS5 it lands directly in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on day one, which means Extra and Premium subscribers can pull it down at no extra cost. The date was confirmed in a release trailer that went out during the PC Gaming Show's Tokyo Direct, tucked into the same Sunday block of announcements that Devolver used to date several of its other autumn releases.

Fifteen months of Early Access, closed out in one date

Mycopunk opened its Early Access period on PC on July 10, 2025, and it has spent the fifteen months since then quietly becoming one of the more unusual things on Devolver's shelf. The pitch has not changed: you are one of a squad of robot rejects, the New Atlas Hazard Crew, hired by the SAXON corporation and handed one last shot at profitable glory before the scrap heap claims you. The job is exterminating a planet-wide fungal catastrophe. The running joke is that SAXON is almost certainly lying about what caused it, and the running gag underneath that is that the company may also have misfiled your taxes.

That tone — corporate gig work rendered as slapstick, with a squad of expendables doing the dying — puts Mycopunk in obvious conversation with the wave of four-player co-op shooters that has dominated the last few years. What separates it is the look. The whole game is drawn in a heavy ink-and-flat-colour style that reads more like a printed comic than a shooter, all hard outlines and saturated blocks of pink, orange and rust. Enemies are silhouettes first and hitboxes second. It is a deliberate choice, and it is the reason screenshots of the game are instantly identifiable in a genre where most competitors look like each other.

Mycopunk first-person combat against fungal enemies

The grid is the game

Mycopunk's central system is a grid-based upgrade rig. Every mission hands you new mods, and every mod is a shape — a tetromino-adjacent block that has to physically fit into the space you have on a weapon or a character. There are hundreds of hand-crafted upgrades, and the constraint is spatial rather than numerical: the question is never simply whether an upgrade is good, but whether you can make it fit alongside the three things you already committed to. The official framing is blunt about how far this is meant to go. Spec into a healing support role. Bolt a deflector shield onto a chainsaw. Turn yourself into a bomb. The studio's line is that it does not really care which.

That system is getting a meaningful rebalance for 1.0. In a developer log earlier this month, Pigeons at Play laid out a change to pattern infusion: in the full release, most upgrade stats will scale with the size of their upgrade pattern. Shrinking a large upgrade down to squeeze it into a tight grid will cost you some of its power, and inflating a pattern deliberately will buy you more of it. Upgrades whose stats key off surrounding cells are exempt. It is the kind of change that sounds small in a patch note and quietly reorders an entire build economy — the compression tricks that veteran players have been using to cram in one more mod now come with a bill attached.

What the last stretch of Early Access added

The final major Early Access drop, Freeze & Fester, went live in late August and opened a new region called the Swamp — a more temperate stretch of New Atlas with caves, industrial pipelines and dense forest, sitting in contrast to the dusty orange plains and ice floes that came before. It also soft-launched cryo as a damage type, initially through a variant of the game's exploding barrel enemy that freezes everything around it, plus four cryo upgrades that can be slotted onto any employee, one at a time, and are found in ice mounds out in the world. The developers were explicit that this was a trial run: the Cryo Grenade proper is held back for 1.0, and the soft launch exists to see how freezing interacts with the rest of the sandbox before the full toolkit arrives.

That update also brought a round of controller work that reads, in hindsight, like console preparation. Aim assist went in as a toggle. Menus became d-pad navigable while keeping the floating-cursor option. The Blitseg vehicle was remapped so the left stick steers, the right trigger boosts and the left trigger drifts. The cargo screen for requesting vehicles and calling extraction became a toggle with its own d-pad navigation. None of it was framed as a PS5 announcement at the time, but a studio does not rebuild its vehicle handling for pad players by accident.

A large fungal boss towers over a Mycopunk hazard crew robot

The dropship, the roach, and the case for $14.99

Between missions the crew returns to an orbital dropship that functions as a social hub rather than a menu — it is stocked with toys and games, and it is where you find Roachard Cox, the insectoid SAXON veteran who delivers most of the game's briefings and most of its jokes. Lottery Larry set up shop there in the August update, letting players reroll specific cosmetic skins. It is a small thing, but it speaks to how the game treats downtime: as a place to mess around with friends rather than a loadout screen with a countdown on it.

Mycopunk supports up to four players in online co-op, with single-player available for anyone who wants to run the Hazard Crew solo. At $14.99 it undercuts nearly everything it competes with, and the PS Plus Game Catalog placement removes the price question entirely for a large chunk of the PS5 audience. For a game whose main obstacle has always been visibility rather than quality — a stylistically strange, mechanically dense co-op shooter that never had a marketing budget to match the genre's heavyweights — landing in a subscription catalogue on day one is arguably the more important half of the announcement.

Mycopunk's 1.0 release lands on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam on October 20, 2026.
