Nintendo is running two Directs on back-to-back days next week. A The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct airs Tuesday, September 8 at 7:00 a.m. PT / 10:00 a.m. ET and runs roughly 30 minutes. A general Nintendo Direct follows on Wednesday, September 9 at the same time, running roughly 45 minutes. Both stream on Nintendo's official YouTube channels.
Two separate broadcasts, deliberately
Splitting the anniversary presentation off from the general Direct is the detail worth paying attention to. Nintendo has previously folded franchise milestones into its regular showcases, and giving Zelda its own 30-minute block signals content that would not survive being compressed into a five-minute segment.
The 40th anniversary itself is real and imminent: the original The Legend of Zelda released on the Famicom Disk System on February 21, 1986. A September broadcast puts Nintendo ahead of that date rather than on it, which historically means the company is setting up a run of releases rather than capping off a celebration.
What Nintendo has actually said
Very little, which is standard. Nintendo's own page gives the dates, the times and the approximate durations and nothing else — no game list, no teases, no framing beyond an invitation to tune in. The company also notes the presentations can be watched through the Nintendo Today! smart-device app, which requires a Nintendo Account and a compatible device.
Treehouse: Live follows the Wednesday show
After the September 9 Direct wraps, Nintendo is running Nintendo Treehouse: Live | September 2026, showing extended gameplay of titles featured during the presentation. That is a meaningful signal on its own. Nintendo reserves Treehouse follow-ups for Directs it expects to carry playable, near-term software rather than distant announcements — the June 2026 Direct got the same treatment and turned out to be one of the more release-dense showcases of the year.
The context going in
Nintendo's slate through the back half of 2026 is already unusually full. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and Final Fantasy Resonance are both dated for October 22, Metaphor: ReFantazio's Switch 2 Edition arrives November 12, and Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen hits Switch 2 on October 9. On the Zelda side specifically, the Switch 2-exclusive Ocarina of Time remake was revealed at the June Direct as a full remake rather than a remaster, and has not had a release window attached to it since.
An anniversary Direct with a 30-minute runtime and an unshipped Ocarina remake sitting in the pipeline is not a difficult connection to draw, though Nintendo has committed to nothing. What the company has committed to is 75 minutes of broadcast across two days, which is a lot of airtime to fill in a year that already has plenty in it.
