PAYDAY: Aces High Shows Its First Real Heist - and Opens a Closed Playtest on August 20

Fast Travel Games debuted gameplay for the officially licensed VR co-op heist game at the August 13 VR Games Showcase, running through loadout building, casing the target and going loud. A closed Meta Quest 3 playtest runs August 20-24 ahead of a Q4 2026 launch on SteamVR and Quest.

PAYDAY: Aces High Shows Its First Real Heist - and Opens a Closed Playtest on August 20

Five months after Starbreeze and Fast Travel Games announced that PAYDAY was going to virtual reality, we finally know what it actually looks like in motion. At the VR Games Showcase on August 13, Fast Travel debuted the first gameplay trailer for PAYDAY: Aces High, built around a heist with the very PAYDAY name of "Stealing Candy From A Billionaire." A closed community playtest follows on August 20.

What the trailer actually shows

The footage runs through the full arc of a job rather than a highlight reel of shooting: building a loadout from weapons, gadgets and skills, casing the target, then picking the moment to drop the pretense and go loud. That last part is the bit VR tends to fumble - most VR shooters are only ever loud - so seeing the stealth-to-chaos transition presented as the core rhythm is the most reassuring thing in the trailer.

Four Aces, one grudge

The setup: you and up to three friends have been framed by a business titan named Warren Jupiter and dumped in prison. Out again, the plan is to hit him where it costs - his banks, his museums, and eventually the penthouse he considers untouchable. It is a thinner premise than PAYDAY 3 attempted and probably the better call for a four-player VR co-op game, where the story mostly needs to justify why four people in masks are in a vault.

The playtest, and how to get in

Fast Travel Games is running a closed community playtest from August 20 through August 24 on Meta Quest 3. Slots are limited and sign-ups go through the game's official site. It is a short window, and given that the studio has been fielding steady questions about a PlayStation VR2 port, expect the feedback from those five days to shape more than just balance numbers.

Release window

PAYDAY: Aces High is an officially licensed Starbreeze title developed by Fast Travel Games, heading to SteamVR and Meta Quest 3. The Steam page currently lists a Q4 2026 window. Fast Travel has been one of the more reliable studios in VR - Wraith, Cities: VR, the Vertigo work - which matters here, because a heist game lives or dies on whether four people in headsets can coordinate without the whole thing collapsing into slapstick. Judging by the trailer, some slapstick is intended.
