Sony Interactive Entertainment is running back-to-back showcases this week. A new State of Play airs Thursday, September 3 at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. CEST / 10:00 p.m. JST, and a second broadcast, State of Play Japan, follows immediately afterwards. Both stream on the official PlayStation channels on YouTube and Twitch.
The headline detail is buried at the end of Sony's own announcement: the main State of Play will close with an extended segment on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Square Enix's concluding chapter of the Remake trilogy. That is the second time in barely a week that the game has been given a marquee slot, after its appearance at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25.
What Sony has actually confirmed
The first broadcast is described as carrying "updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners" before handing the closing stretch to Square Enix. Sony has not given a runtime, which is itself a small tell — showcases with a named finale usually land somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes, and the June 2026 State of Play ran a little over half an hour before Santa Monica Studio's God of War: Laufey reveal closed it out.
State of Play Japan is a separate show with a separate host. Voice actor Yuki Kaji returns as MC, and the brief is explicitly regional: "deep dives into upcoming games from game studios in Japan and Asia, including new gameplay, announcements, and more." The main show airs in English with Japanese subtitles; the Japan show airs in Japanese with English subtitles, so both are watchable either way.
The Final Fantasy VII Revelation segment is the reason to set an alarm
Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Summer Game Fest 2026 as the third and final entry in the Remake trilogy, targeting spring 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The reveal leaned on the promise of a genuinely open world, an expanded job-class layer, and Cid and Vincent stepping up as full party members after their limited roles in Rebirth.
What it has not shown, in any meaningful quantity, is sustained gameplay. An "extended segment" on a Sony stage — the platform holder that has carried the trilogy since 2020 — is where you would expect that to change. It is also the natural spot to firm up a release date, because "spring 2027" is currently doing a lot of work for a game that has already had two showings in three months.
The rest of the slate is a genuine unknown
Sony's first-party calendar for the next twelve months is unusually visible for once. Marvel's Wolverine lands September 15. Control: Resonant arrives September 24 and Onimusha: Way of the Sword a day later. Ace Combat 8 follows on October 2, Rayman Legends Retold on October 1, Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition on October 1, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is booked for February 12, 2027. Most of the near-term dates are already set, which means this show has room for things that are not yet on the board.
The obvious gap is the back half of 2027 and beyond — the window where God of War: Laufey, Until Dawn 2 and Silent Hill: Townfall currently sit without hard dates. Third-party partners are the other wildcard, and September showcases have historically been where Japanese publishers stack their Tokyo Game Show reveals a fortnight early. TGS 2026 runs later this month, so anything Sony shows on Thursday is deliberately being pulled forward.
One practical note for co-streamers
Sony has added its now-standard warning that the broadcasts may include licensed music it does not control, which can cause claims on VODs and archived co-streams. If you plan to keep a recording up, the advice is to cut the music-heavy sections rather than find out afterwards.
