The cult retro shooter series System Critical has made the leap to Sony's headset. System Critical 3 now has its launch trailer out via the official PlayStation channel, billed as "the ultimate VR platformer-shooter" and built specifically for PlayStation VR2.
Old-school run-and-gun, reborn in VR
If you have never met the series, picture classic 90s Mega Man filtered through a virtual-reality lens. Across the trilogy you play a cyborg blasting through tightly designed levels with an arm cannon, lobbing grenades, raising shields, swinging melee weapons and dodging walls of incoming projectiles. System Critical 3 leans hard into that DNA, pairing intense gunplay with gravity-defying jumps and what developer AltLab VR describes as mind-bending virtual environments.
A devoted passion-project series
What makes System Critical stand out is not a blockbuster budget — it is the opposite. The series is largely the work of a solo developer, and it has built a loyal following among VR players who praise its precise, deliberate level design and unapologetically retro, run-and-gun spirit. The first game, System Critical: The Race Against Time, cast you as Cyborg 17 racing against a 24-hour self-destruct timer. System Critical 2 then expanded the formula across outer space and distant planets, piling on more weapons, more levels and a string of boss fights.
The earlier entries have been available on Meta Quest and Steam, and this third installment brings the arm-cannon action to PlayStation VR2, tapping the headset's hardware for its mix of shooting and platforming. It is exactly the kind of compact, arcade-flavoured experience that tends to thrive in VR — easy to pick up, tough to put down, and a welcome palate cleanser between the platform's bigger, heavier releases.
For PS VR2 owners hunting for that old-school run-and-gun fix, System Critical 3 is one to keep on the radar. You can watch the official launch trailer above.
