Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter's Demo Is Out Now - and Your Save Carries Straight Into the Full Game

Falcom and GungHo have released a free Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter demo on PS5, Switch and Steam, covering the prologue through the start of Chapter I. Saves transfer to the full game, which arrives September 17 - and the full edition and pricing structure is now public.

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter's Demo Is Out Now - and Your Save Carries Straight Into the Full Game

Falcom and GungHo have put a free demo for Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter out into the world, and they have paired it with the game's full opening movie. The demo is live now on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, roughly four weeks ahead of the remake's September 17 worldwide launch.

The important detail is not the length of the demo but what happens when it ends. Save data created in the trial carries directly into the full release, so anything you do over the next month is not throwaway practice. That is a small thing on paper and a genuinely useful one in a series where a single chapter can run longer than some complete RPGs.

How much of the game you actually get

The demo covers the game's opening stretch in full: everything from Prologue: A Maiden's Resolve through to the start of Chapter I: Sneaking Shadows. In the original 2006 release that is a substantial slice - the prologue alone re-establishes Estelle Bright after the first game's cliffhanger, reintroduces the Bracer Guild, and gets the party moving before the plot proper takes over.

There is one platform wrinkle worth knowing. There is no dedicated Switch 2 demo. The Switch version runs on Switch 2 through backward compatibility, which is fine for a trial, but it means Switch 2 owners are not sampling the Switch 2 build of the game - they are sampling the Switch build on Switch 2 hardware. If you are specifically trying to judge the Switch 2 version's performance before buying, this demo will not answer that question.

The pricing picture, now fully visible

Alongside the demo, GungHo has filled in the edition structure. The standard edition is $59.99 on PS5 and Switch, or $64.99 for the Switch 2 Edition. A Season Pass covering cosmetic DLC runs $24.99 on every platform, and a Digital Deluxe Edition bundles the base game and the pass together for $79.99. Anyone who buys the Switch version and later moves to Switch 2 can upgrade for $4.99.

That $5 upgrade path is the part worth flagging. It is the difference between buying the Switch version now and being locked out later, and it means the cheaper $59.99 entry point is not a trap if you are planning a hardware jump in the next year.

Where the story picks up

2nd Chapter resumes immediately after 1st Chapter, with Estelle searching for Joshua and running headlong into the Enforcers of Ouroboros. The society that spent the first game lurking in the margins moves to the centre here, and the scope widens from a regional mystery to something that puts Liberl itself at stake. It is the half of the story that turned the original two-parter into the foundation the entire Trails franchise was built on.

For a remake, that is a demanding brief. 2nd Chapter is the game the series' long-term fans are most protective of, and it is also the point where newcomers who liked 1st Chapter decide whether they are in for another eighty hours. Handing out a save-transferable demo a month early is a reasonable way to answer both audiences at once - let people feel the combat and the presentation themselves rather than argue about screenshots.

What to watch between now and September 17

The opening movie is the other half of today's release, and it is the more revealing artefact of the two. Falcom's openings have always doubled as a statement of intent about tone and cast, and this one lands at a moment when the studio is being judged on how faithfully it can rebuild a twenty-year-old script in a modern engine.

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter launches September 17 worldwide on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. The demo is free on PS5, Switch and Steam right now, and your progress is waiting for you on the other side.
