Ares Interactive and AMC Networks have pulled the curtain back on The Walking Dead: Aftermath, a free-to-play roguelite game heading to the App Store and Google Play this summer. Developed by Ares' Swift Games studio — the team behind the hit title Heroes vs Hordes — Aftermath marks the first roguelite entry in The Walking Dead gaming franchise.
The announcement, made on April 28, introduces a game that blends fast-paced roguelite combat with survivor strategy and base-building progression, challenging players to adapt, scavenge, and fight through increasingly dangerous scenarios drawn from the iconic TV series.
Play as Rick, Daryl, and Michonne
Aftermath puts players in the shoes of fan-favorite survivors from The Walking Dead universe. Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and Michonne headline the roster, with additional character reveals expected in the coming weeks. Each survivor brings unique abilities to the battlefield as players battle walker hordes, hostile human enemies, and powerful bosses.
Campaign missions revisit familiar locations from the television series, including Hershel's Farm, Woodbury, and Alexandria. Between runs, players return to a central camp where they can assign garrison survivors to reinforce defenses and generate resources, while combat-focused survivors are deployed into progressively harder missions.
Roguelite Meets Survival Strategy
The game's roguelite structure centers on quick matches with continuous progression and procedurally varied challenges. The loop is designed to keep runs feeling fresh while a persistent meta-progression layer lets players carry meaningful upgrades between attempts. It's a formula that worked well for Swift Games' Heroes vs Hordes, which built a sizable audience with a similar approach.
The Walking Dead: Aftermath is currently in soft launch in select regions, with a full global release on the App Store and Google Play planned for this summer. Additional platforms have been teased but not confirmed. Pre-registration details and further character reveals are expected soon.
