D3 Publisher has announced Earth Defense Force 6.2: Invaders from Another World for PlayStation 5, and the headline number is exactly the one this series trades on: at peak, the game will throw roughly double the enemies on screen compared to Earth Defense Force 6.
It launches in 2027, exclusively on PS5, and a playable build will be at Tokyo Game Show 2026 — September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
An enhanced 6, not a 7
The decimal in the title is doing real work. Earth Defense Force 6.2 is a significant update of Earth Defense Force 6, a game that launched in Japan in 2022 and globally in 2024 and has since passed a million players. D3 is explicit that the PS5-exclusive footprint is what makes the numbers possible: dropping PS4 and freeing up the headroom is how you get better visuals and twice the bugs on screen at once.
There is precedent, and series veterans will already have clocked it. The only other decimal entry is 2015's Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair, an enhanced version of Earth Defense Force 2025 that added gameplay improvements and new story content on top of the original. 4.1 is remembered fondly, and it set the expectation for what a point release means here: not a remaster with a resolution bump, but a restructured, denser version of a game that was already generous.

Every enemy type, doubled
D3's framing is characteristically blunt about what the extra enemies are for. The pitch is an “extreme” sense of despair as larger swarms rain down — ants, bees, spiders, the lot, each type increased in volume — delivering what the publisher calls the series' greatest overwhelming sense of despair and the greatest satisfaction of clearing gigantic and countless enemies.
Two other density changes matter as much as the raw count:
- Formidable enemies move into the main story. The tougher variants that previously appeared only in Earth Defense Force 6's DLC missions have doubled in number and now show up in the campaign proper.
- A brand-new species. Something resembling giant mushrooms joins the roster — the first genuinely new enemy type rather than a rebalanced returning one.
Missions rebuilt, and the series' first weapon customisation
The mission list is based on Earth Defense Force 6, but more than half of the existing missions have been restructured and rebalanced, and there are completely new missions on top. D3 claims this makes it the entry with the most missions in series history — a meaningful boast given EDF 6 already shipped with well over a hundred.

The genuinely new system is weapon customisation, a first for the series. Enhancements drop from defeated enemies and let you modify weapons around a strategy rather than simply swapping to whatever has the bigger number. The examples D3 gave are concrete: custom ammunition that adds a combustion effect to an assault rifle, or freezing rockets loaded into a launcher.
That is a bigger change than it sounds for EDF. Loadout building in this series has traditionally been a pre-mission decision made from an enormous flat list of drops — you find the gun, you take the gun. Letting players shape a weapon's behaviour introduces an actual build layer to a game that has historically resisted one, and it gives the four classes a reason to specialise beyond their existing movement gimmicks.

What has not been said
Plenty. There is no price, no word on whether owners of Earth Defense Force 6 get an upgrade path or a discount, no confirmation on save transfer, and no indication yet of a Western release date or publisher arrangement — the 2027 window announced today is for Japan. PC and Xbox are not mentioned at all; this is a PS5 exclusive as announced.
Whether 6.2 follows 4.1 in eventually broadening past its launch platform is an open question, and one the series' history makes reasonable to ask. For now, the concrete facts are these: PS5, 2027, twice the swarm, mushrooms, and a demo you can play at Tokyo Game Show next month.
