Fable Finally Showed Its Combat - an 18-Minute Gamescom Quest With a Two-Handed Hammer, Seven Spells and a Chicken Curse That Works on Skeletons

Playground Games released an 18-minute narrated walkthrough of a full Fable quest at Gamescom 2026. The Mud and Death mission sends the Hero into a haunted mine with Heroes' Guild leader Humphry and demonstrates all three combat pillars - the two-handed Bower Hammer, seven spells including the chicken-transforming Befowl, and a bow-and-crossbow ranged layer with weak-point targeting. Fable still launches February 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Fable Finally Showed Its Combat - an 18-Minute Gamescom Quest With a Two-Handed Hammer, Seven Spells and a Chicken Curse That Works on Skeletons

Playground Games has spent two years showing people what Albion looks like. At Gamescom 2026 it finally showed what it feels like to swing a hammer in it. Xbox published an 18-minute narrated walkthrough of a full Fable quest on Wednesday, and alongside it Xbox Wire ran a hands-on breakdown of the combat system the studio has kept mostly off-camera since the reboot was announced.

The quest is called Mud and Death. Your Hero tags along with Humphry, the leader of the Heroes' Guild, into a mine that used to be flooded and is now merely haunted. What comes out of the walls is skeletons and ghosts, which turns out to be a convenient excuse to demonstrate every tool the game gives you.

Fable
Fable's melee pillar leans on slow, heavy weapons - the two-handed Bower Hammer swings wide enough to catch several enemies at once.

Strength, Skill and Will, but you are not asked to pick one

The old Fable games sorted their skill trees into Strength, Skill and Will - melee, ranged and magic - and quietly encouraged you to specialise. Playground has kept the three pillars and thrown out the specialisation. In the demo the Hero swaps between all three mid-fight without a menu, and the whole system appears to be built around the assumption that you will.

On the melee side the standout is the two-handed Bower Hammer, a slow, ugly, extremely satisfying-looking weapon that hits multiple enemies per swing and can be charged into a spin that clears a room. Parries matter: a well-timed one can take a limb off a skeleton and leave the rest of it staggering. Each weapon also has its own finisher, which is very much a Playground flourish - this is the studio that built an entire driving series around the replay camera.

Seven spells, and one of them is the chicken one

Will is where the demo spent most of its time. Seven spells were shown:

That last one is not a joke the marketing team wrote after the fact. Chickens have been load-bearing to Fable's sense of humour since 2004, and the fact that the spell has a documented interaction with the skeleton enemy type suggests somebody spent real production time on it.

The ranged pillar covers a slow, accurate Deepwood Bow and a faster Repeater Crossbow - and yes, Albion
The ranged pillar covers a slow, accurate Deepwood Bow and a faster Repeater Crossbow - and yes, Albion's wildlife includes some very large chickens.

Ranged combat has a weak-point layer

Two ranged weapons appeared: the Deepwood Bow, which draws slowly but rewards headshots, and a Repeater Crossbow that trades damage for rate of fire and is apparently the answer to specific enemy types. Both feed into a weak-point system - shoot something in the leg and it stumbles, which is the sort of small mechanical hook that keeps a three-pillar combat system from collapsing into "use whichever button does the most damage."

The bestiary shown in the demo is small but structured. The Hollow Folk are the skeleton family and come in melee, ranged and armoured variants, all of them dismemberable. Wraiths are fast flying ghosts whose real threat is that they spawn more enemies. And the Lantern Keeper is a mini-boss that flies, breathes fire and also spawns - a fight designed to punish you for standing still with one weapon equipped.

Bowerstone, at last

The 18-minute video also does something the combat write-up cannot: it walks through Bowerstone. Albion's biggest city has been in every trailer as a skyline and a mood, and this is the first extended look at its streets and interiors as a place you move through rather than a backdrop.

Albion
Albion's darker side. Fable's reboot has leaned into a more storybook-gothic register than the original trilogy's broad comedy.

The dates have not moved

Fable is still set for February 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC and Cloud, with the Premium Edition opening early access on February 18. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere release, so a purchase covers console and PC. The Standard Edition is $69.99; Premium is $99.99 and bundles the early access window, an artbook, the soundtrack and a post-launch expansion.

That February window is the one Playground moved to in May, having previously targeted 2026. Nothing at Gamescom suggested it is moving again - which, six months out from a tentpole release, is the news underneath the news.
