Xbox Will Turn Your Game Discs Into Digital Copies - Insert the Disc Once, Keep the Entitlement, and the Disc Still Works

Xbox announced a disc-to-digital programme at Gamescom 2026. Inserting a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc and launching the game attaches a digital entitlement to your Microsoft account, unlocking Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming where applicable - and the disc keeps working. Thousands of titles are supported at launch; original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not. Xbox Insiders start testing August 31, 2026.

Xbox Will Turn Your Game Discs Into Digital Copies - Insert the Disc Once, Keep the Entitlement, and the Disc Still Works

Xbox used the first day of its Gamescom broadcast to announce something that sounds small and is not: if you own a physical Xbox game, you will soon be able to insert the disc, launch it once, and keep a digital copy on your account afterwards.

The feature is called disc-to-digital, and it works about as simply as that description implies. Put a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X, start the game, and the console reads the identifier baked into the disc and attaches a digital entitlement to your Microsoft account. From then on the game sits in your library like anything you bought from the store. The disc keeps working exactly as it did - nothing is consumed, burned or deactivated.

Disc-to-digital covers Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. The all-digital Series S, right, has no drive to read them with - but the entitlements land on the account, not the console.

What it covers, and what it does not

Microsoft says the programme starts with "thousands" of titles and will grow over time, which is a careful way of saying not every disc on your shelf will work on day one. The boundary that is firm is generational: disc-to-digital supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X games only. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not part of it, even though many of those titles are playable through backwards compatibility.

Once a game is on your account it behaves like a digital purchase, which is where the feature stops being a convenience and starts being useful. Titles that support Xbox Play Anywhere become playable on PC at no extra cost, and anything eligible for Xbox Cloud Gaming can be streamed to the other devices you sign into. A disc that previously only worked in one room of your house now follows your account around.

Jason Ronald frames it as preservation

Jason Ronald, Xbox's VP of Next Generation, tied the announcement to a longer-running theme: "This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation." That framing is doing real work. Optical drives fail. Discs degrade. Xbox Series S shipped without a drive at all, and the disc-drive share of console sales has been falling for a decade. A physical library that can be converted into account entitlements is a physical library that survives the death of the hardware that read it.

It also lands in a specific competitive context. Sony confirmed in July that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation releases from January 2028, pushing its catalogue digital-only. Xbox is not reversing that industry direction - it is offering the people already holding shelves of plastic a way to come along.

Testing starts August 31

Xbox Insiders can start testing disc-to-digital on August 31, 2026. Microsoft has not committed to a public date beyond saying the broader rollout on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles will follow in the months after. No pricing was mentioned in the announcement, and Xbox has not detailed how individual publishers opt in - the two questions most likely to determine how much that "thousands" figure grows.

The obvious caveat is that this is still a licence, not ownership. A digital entitlement lives on Microsoft's servers under Microsoft's terms, and the disc in your hand remains the only copy nobody can revoke. But for the practical problem most people actually have - a working game, an aging console, and a drive that will not spin forever - it is the first answer a platform holder has offered.
