GSC Game World has released version 2.1 of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, an update it calls The Zone Lookout. It is the studio's first major patch since the large 2.0 "Archmajor" update, and it is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC across Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG and the Microsoft Store. The headline change is one the game's PC players have asked for since launch: you can now push the distance at which the Zone's free-roaming A-Life characters are simulated and drawn, and the update rebuilds long-range combat, binoculars and anomalies around that new setting. A paid fast-travel service run by squad leaders and a very long list of fixes round it out.
See further into the Zone
Under Settings, then Game, a new set of visualization presets controls how far away A-Life NPCs are streamed in. Raising it means stalkers, bandits and mutant packs out in the open world stay visible and active at a greater distance instead of popping into existence closer to you. There is also a Dynamic preset that scales the range to the hardware it is running on. GSC is upfront that this is a trade-off: the default preset remains its recommendation for stability, higher presets can cost performance, and the number of presets on offer may differ between platforms.
The setting applies to A-Life characters specifically. Quest and scripted NPCs follow their own rules and are not affected in the same way, so the change is about the living background of the Zone rather than story encounters.

Long-range firefights, rebuilt
Seeing further is only useful if what you see behaves properly, so 2.1 adjusts long-distance combat to match. Weapon ballistics have been tuned for engagements at greater range, and the audible radius of gunfights now scales with the streaming distance you pick, so at higher presets you will hear a battle breaking out well before you reach it. Binoculars have been updated to support the new ranges too, with a longer identification distance when the expanded A-Life setting is on.
The AI list is long. GSC says it has fixed NPCs aiming in the wrong direction, NPCs refusing to attack a player they were not looking straight at, characters and mutants getting stuck in mid-air, NPCs walking through dialogue or standing inside campfires, and excessive spawns of mutants at Rostok and of mercenaries at the Duga. Reactions to melee attacks have been adjusted, and the internal height of some low cover was raised so AI uses it more sensibly.
Fast travel with squad leaders
The other new system gives you a way to cross ground without walking all of it. Friendly and neutral squad leaders are now marked on your compass, and if you talk to one, they can guide you to a nearby destination that lies along their squad's route. It is not free, and it is not a teleport to anywhere: only nearby locations you have already explored are on the table. It sits alongside the game's existing paid guide system as a more organic option that comes from the squads wandering the Zone.

Anomalies and the CNPP
Anomalies were reworked to fit the new systems. Their render distance now follows the streaming setting, they interact with dead bodies differently, and the arch-anomaly at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant gets visual improvements. The Flare anomaly's light effects were also changed, an issue where distant anomaly effects froze was fixed, and the Faraday anomaly no longer renders on the GPU when inactive.
A long list of fixes, many for PS5
A large share of the bug fixes target the PS5 version, where a number of story characters could go missing after the 2.0 patch. GSC lists fixes for absent NPCs across missions including Deal With The Devil, A Needle In A Haystack, Hot On The Trail, The Assault On The Duga and In Search Of Past Glory, as well as quest items on bodies that failed to appear. A bug that stopped the DLC's opening missions from starting is also fixed, as is an issue that reset your equipment when starting the DLC early or at an advanced point.
Elsewhere, the patch addresses blurry textures on several scopes when aiming, a memory leak caused by large numbers of map markers, performance drops at the Perimeter Dam and Underpass Exit locations, an achievement that only counted mutant kills made in a single session, and being unable to shoot through bushes and branches. Level art and level design were revised across the Generators, Cooling Tower, CNPP and Malachite regions, and inside the X-16 lab.

Handhelds, cloud and a warning for modders
Several fixes reach beyond the console and desktop versions. Gamepad input on portable PCs and the Steam Machine has been corrected, DLC and add-ons now apply on the first launch under SteamOS, and GeForce NOW users can once again launch the DLC. Some graphics option descriptions were also rewritten to be clearer.
As with every large S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 patch, GSC warns that mods may break. If you see stability or performance problems after updating to The Zone Lookout, the studio's advice is to disable your mods first and contact its support site if the problem persists. GSC says the update was planned around community feedback from social media, forums and reviews, and it is the clearest sign yet that the studio is still investing in the base game alongside its expansion content.
