Six years after the Traveler first heard the name, Snezhnaya is finally open. Genshin Impact's Version 7.0 "Everwinter Without Mercy" went live today, August 12, at 11:00 AM (UTC+8), and it does something no previous major update has: it hands players the nation the entire Fatui plot has been pointing at since 2020.
It also, less predictably, adds a third-person shooter mode. More on that below.
Getting in, and staying warm
Access runs through Dottore's research lab and requires Prologue Act III, which is a low enough bar that returning players do not need a weekend of catch-up. Once you are through, the region opens across three major areas: Morepesok, Snezhnograd and Glupov — the last of which HoYoverse has been calling the "Citadel of Fools" in its own teasers.
Snezhnaya's hook is a survival layer. The Bitter Cold system drains you in exposed terrain, and the Eye of Graeae gadget is how you manage temperature. Genshin has flirted with environmental pressure before — Dragonspine's sheer cold gauge is the obvious ancestor — but this is region-wide rather than one mountain, and the nation's settlements are strung together by the extensive train network the studio has been showing since the first teasers.

Two new characters, one of them free
Odette is the marquee addition: a 5-star Cryo sword user, available from launch. Alyosha, a 4-star Electro polearm user, is free — you get him by progressing through Archon Quest Chapter VII, Act I, which is the same quest that gives the update its name. Finishing it also pays out around 560 Primogems plus Odette's ascension materials.
The Cryo Traveler unlocks here too, completing the elemental set for the protagonist. If you have been holding Crowns for a Traveler build, this is the version to spend them in.
Banner phases are laid out cleanly:
- Phase 1 (Aug 12 – Sep 1): Odette debut, plus an Arlecchino rerun
- Phase 2 (Sep 1 – Sep 22): Flins and Ineffa reruns
Two new reactions - and Cryo finally gets a job
This is the part that will reshape team building. Version 7.0 adds two reactions, both built around Cryo:
- Stellar-Conduct (Cryo + Electro) — creates a Starlight Prism and a Polestar Field
- Stellar-Swirl (Anemo + Cryo) — summons a Stellar Vortex that deals Cryo damage
Cryo has spent years as Genshin's least exciting element, valuable mostly for freezing things in place and enabling Cryo resonance. Giving it two brand-new reaction identities in the update that also introduces a 5-star Cryo sword and the Cryo Traveler is not a coincidence — this is a deliberate rehabilitation of an entire element, and it arrives with the characters needed to exploit it.

Genshin has a shooter now
The Shadow Realm is 7.0's strangest inclusion: a third-person shooter mode with three actual firearms. The Cryo Rifle is the precision option, the Electro Rifle auto-locks onto targets, and the Grenade Launcher handles crowds. There is a matching outfit, "Night Hunt in Snow," to go with it.
On a phone, this is the detail worth watching. Genshin's touch controls are built around a camera you rotate with your thumb and abilities you tap; precision aiming is a different demand entirely, and how well the Cryo Rifle feels on a 6.5-inch screen versus a controller will decide whether Shadow Realm is a fun diversion or the mode mobile players quietly skip.
Events, and the download
The event calendar for the patch cycle:
- Mutual Aid in Bloom (Aug 12 – 24) — Katheryne statue building
- Great Expeditionist Challenge (Aug 28 – Sep 14) — grants a free Diona
- Trial of the Bastion (Sep 7 – 17) — Shadow Realm challenges
- Overflowing Abundance (Sep 14 – 21) — double-drop window
Preload weighs in at roughly 8 GB on PC and about 3 GB on mobile, which is modest for a new nation. Everyone at Adventure Rank 5 or above collects 300 Primogems in maintenance compensation.
Version 7.0 runs in two acts, "Everwinter Without Mercy" and "Wraith's Nocturne." Genshin Impact is available on iOS, Android, PC and PlayStation.
